A SLAP tear (Superior Labrum, Anterior to Posterior) is a specific type of labral tear at the top of the shoulder socket, at the point where the biceps tendon attaches to the labrum.
Common in throwing and overhead athletes from repetitive stress on the biceps-labrum attachment, and can also occur from a fall onto an outstretched arm or a sudden pulling injury.
Deep, poorly localized shoulder pain, often worse with overhead activity or throwing, a catching or popping sensation, and sometimes a feeling of weakness or reduced throwing velocity in athletes.
Physical therapy focused on shoulder mechanics and strengthening is the first line of treatment, and resolves many cases, particularly in older or less overhead-demanding patients. Persistent symptoms, especially in throwing athletes, may require arthroscopic repair of the torn labrum.
