The labrum is a ring of cartilage that deepens the shoulder socket and provides stability. A labral tear is a tear in this cartilage, which can occur in different locations and patterns depending on the mechanism of injury.
Can result from a single traumatic event (a fall or shoulder dislocation) or from repetitive overhead motion, common in throwing and racquet-sport athletes.
Deep shoulder pain, catching or clicking with certain movements, a sensation of instability, and pain with overhead or cross-body motion.
Many labral tears respond to physical therapy focused on strengthening the surrounding muscles to compensate. Tears that cause ongoing instability, mechanical catching, or don't improve with therapy are often addressed with arthroscopic repair.
