Biceps Tendinitis

Shoulder

What Is It?

The biceps tendon runs through the front of the shoulder on its way to attach inside the joint. Biceps tendinitis is inflammation of this tendon, usually from irritation as it passes through a narrow groove in the shoulder.

What Causes It?

Repetitive overhead activity (throwing, swimming, weightlifting), age-related wear, or irritation associated with other shoulder problems like rotator cuff disease or shoulder impingement.

Symptoms

Aching pain at the front of the shoulder that can radiate down toward the elbow, worse with overhead activity or lifting with the palm facing up. Tenderness is usually reproducible by pressing directly over the front of the shoulder.

Treatment & Need for Surgery

Rest, activity modification, anti-inflammatory medication, and physical therapy resolve most cases. When biceps tendinitis is severe, associated with a partial tear, or doesn't respond to conservative care, a biceps tenodesis procedure — releasing the tendon and reattaching it lower on the arm — relieves pain while preserving strength.
