Meniscus Tear

Knee

What Is It?

The menisci are two C-shaped cartilage cushions that sit between the thigh bone and shin bone, absorbing shock and stabilizing the knee. A meniscus tear is damage to one of these structures, and can take several different shapes and patterns.

What Causes It?

Traumatic tears occur from a twisting or pivoting injury, often during sports. Degenerative tears develop gradually with age and can occur with minimal or no clear injury.

Symptoms

Pain along the joint line, swelling, catching or locking sensations, and a feeling of the knee "giving way," particularly with twisting or squatting motions.

Treatment & Need for Surgery

Many tears, especially smaller or degenerative ones, improve with physical therapy and activity modification. Tears that cause mechanical symptoms (locking, catching), are in a repairable location, or don't improve with conservative care are typically treated arthroscopically — either repaired (preserving the meniscus, preferred when possible, especially in younger patients) or trimmed (partial meniscectomy).
