Golfer's Elbow

Elbow

What Is It?

Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis) is inflammation and micro-tearing of the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the bony bump on the inner side of the elbow.

What Causes It?

Caused by repetitive wrist-flexion and gripping motions — despite the name, it affects golfers, throwers, and anyone doing repetitive forearm work (manual labor, racquet sports, weightlifting).

Symptoms

Pain and tenderness on the inner side of the elbow that can radiate into the forearm, worse with gripping, wrist flexion, or throwing motions.

Treatment & Need for Surgery

The large majority of cases improve with rest, activity modification, physical therapy, bracing, and anti-inflammatory treatment. Surgery is reserved for the small percentage of cases that fail to improve after several months of dedicated conservative treatment.
