The distal triceps tendon attaches the triceps muscle to the back of the elbow (olecranon) and is responsible for straightening the arm. An injury is a partial or complete tear of this tendon — less common than a biceps tear but similar in mechanism.
Usually caused by a fall onto an outstretched, bent arm, or a sudden forceful contraction against resistance, such as during heavy bench pressing.
Pain and swelling at the back of the elbow, weakness extending the arm, and in a complete tear, a palpable gap in the tendon and inability to push the arm straight against resistance.
Complete tears require surgical repair to restore extension strength. Partial tears without significant weakness may be managed with bracing and physical therapy, with close monitoring for improvement.
